FREE SPRING GARDENING SEMINARS AT JENSEN NURSERY AND GARDEN CENTER

10:00 AM Gardening  for Dummies – By Jennifer Fletcher
Gardening advice presented in a simple easy to understand format

Healthy, happy and hardy.  Pampered, pretty and pruned.  These will be the words you use to describe the plants in your yard after you have attended this informative seminar.

11:00 AM 3-D Gardening – By Bill Dowie
Designing to maximize all the Space in your yard and garden

Some adventurous gardeners may have the knowledge and skills to move vertically in their garden, but 3-D gardening is so much more.  Inter-spaces, nooks and crannies, cracks, edges, layers... these are key concepts to make your garden beautiful while increasing the amount of usable space you can plant all your flowers and vegetables.  Think you have run out of room?  Wondering how to increase bio-diversity in your small yard?  This first of two seminars will introduce you to spacial concepts of the space-time continuum you may have not thought about.

12:00 NOON FREE LUNCH

12:30 PM Critters Anomynous – By Susan Jensen Stubbe and Tammy Jensen
An Open Panel Discussion on how to keep wildlife from eating your trees and plants

Does wildlife affect your plant’s health? An open panel discussion on methods both natural and chemical to keep your yard wildlife free. Audience participation appreciated!  Instead of waiting till it is too late be proactive and prevent the damage that can happen. Help others with any solutions you may have. Enjoy a healthy happy yard – not one ravaged by squirrels, voles, deers, and rabbits!

1:30 PM 4-D Gardening – By Bill Dowie
Thinking about the aspects of Time for your short and long-term garden plans

Time is fleeting and as humans we are caught in a linear perception of time passing second by second, year by year.  In Nature, the concept of time is irrelevant.  Nature is dictated by cycles and ebbs and flows of matter and energy.  So how do we reconcile such philosophical ideas to make a beautiful garden?  This seminar will explore the themes of legacy planting, time-framing your designs, plant succession, and the young-to-old transition of your human and animal visitors to your yard (that rabbit seems like it's 20 years old!).  This second of two seminars will introduce you to temporal concepts of the space-time continuum you may have not thought about.

Email tammy@jensennursery.com to register. Specify the seminars you wish to attend and if you will be joining us for lunch. Limited seating so register early

FALL FIESTA SEMINARS
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 17, 2011

9:30 -11:00 FALL YARD CARE – Susan Jensen Stubbe & Grant Dunn
The drought this summer has been very tough on our plants, trees, lawns, and gardens. Fungus, mildew, insect infestations, dry lumpy soil, and lawns you would rather not look at! What can be done to help revive our yards? Susan and Grant will discuss solutions to reverse the damage. There will be a question/ answer period at the end for fall yard care questions you may have. Special discount will be given on all yard care products to everyone who attends!

11:00 -12:00 FREE LUNCH - Sandwiches, and Carrot Cake!

12:00 -12:45 UPCYCLING FOR YOUR YARD AND GARDEN
Bill Dowie - Ecoplicity Enviromental
Upcyling – Refurbishing and reinventing household objects – is a new spin on recycling. Bill, our guest designer, will share his own adventures in taking old “junk” from lumber, and metal parts and creating object d’art and focal points. Since the City of Winnipeg’s “Giveaway Weekend” is the previous weekend, bring in a found object and Bill will facilitate an imagination session with your fellow participants! Feel free to bring in some extra “pieces” for trading!

1:00 - 1:45 FLOWERS IN THE SHADE – Tammy Jensen
One of the most common design questions I get is “What will grow in a shady spot that blooms?” I will be going over all the shrubs and perennials we carry for the shade that does flower! Bring sketches, pictures, or measurements of the shady area you want to plant in. At the end of the seminar we can help you design a small shade garden, or help you find the right shade perennial for a particular location.

2:00-2:45 TULIPS AND FALL BULBS - Karl Sorenson
What is new and exciting this year? How do I plant? What do I need to do to have beautiful tulips and bulbs in the spring? Karl will take you step by step through everything you need to know! Special discount on bulbs will be given to all who attend!

3:00-3:45 PRUNING – Gregory Funk
Greg loves pruning! Shrubs and trees love to be pruned. Learn from an expert how to properly prune your shrubs and trees this fall.

Bill Dowie - Ecoplicity Environmental - FREE Gardening Seminar

Bill Dowie had a fantastic time at Jensen's Nursery last Saturday, April 9th, 2011. He was very pleased to see a great turn-out of fellow gardening
enthusiasts (and maybe more of the 'male variety' could show up next time - but bring your own lawn chair - we were pretty well sold-out).

Tammy and Bill envision this sort of lecture series to be a regular event - timed around the slower periods of the nursery, of course. So, if there are
any particular topics you would like talked about, Tammy, Susan, and Bill will be happy to research and coordinate some information; even if it is just
a web-site feature.

Bill would like to thank all those who attended - tell your friends to join the Jensen's Nursery e-mail list, and they will also have the opportunity to sit
in on the next Jensen's Seminar Series! Great Gardening!

For more information on Bill's journey as an environmental consultant, please visit his profile on Linked In, a professional profile web-site. His public
profile can be found at http://www.linkedin.com/pub/william-bill-dowie-ba-leed-ap-mcpm/b/b0a/735 Don't forget that Bill will be an in-house
consultant throughout the summer at Jensen's - Tammy will keep you posted. And this year, Bill is also the designer-in-residence for Prairie Flora - a
true Manitoba native plant nursery. Both of these companies will offer special deals in conjunction with using Bill's design 'walk-about' services.

Bill has an ecological landscape design-build company, Ecoplicity Environmental, and lives in Sunny St. James – his family property has five backyard
naturalization certificates from local, national, and international conservation organizations.

For the last several years, Bill has been informally working towards a Masters degree with the faculties of Engineering, Architecture, and Environment
at the University of Manitoba; he holds a baccalaureate degree in Applied Economics, as well as an Applied Management Certificate. Recently he has
obtained a Masters Certificate in Project management jointly offered by York University and the University of Winnipeg - and is pursuing his Project
Management Professional (PMP) designation. Bill is well versed in the language of green buildings and the surrounding site, as he is a LEED
Accredited Professional, holds a certificate in Permaculture Design, and is a Master Gardener candidate.

Bill works professionally as an independent environmental management consultant. He is an advisor for Junior Achievement Manitoba, the
Volunteer-Chair for the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce's Sustainability Working Group, and serves on the Mayor’s Environmental Advisory
Committee, as well as the City of Winnipeg Museums Board. When he is not helping people re-invent their landscapes to be beautifully in harmony
with nature, he plays organized touch football.
