Voles in my lawn!

As the snow finally recedes you may be noticing areas of dead grass and tunneling in your lawn. This is caused by voles. Vole damage is at an all-time high in Manitoba this year. During the winter months they fed on the roots and grass blades leaving bare spots and uneven tunnels. This can be easily repaired. Once the lawn is dry enough, rake the debris away. Then add topsoil to even out the tunnels and apply spring fertilizer such as Evolve 10-3-3. After 3- 4 weeks if the grass has not grown in you will want to top dress and seed the area. Keeping the soil moist until the seed germinates. At this point do not fertilize the new seed until you have mowed the lawn 3 times.
